Mohawk Paper Show

Mohawk Fine Paper and Mac Papers would like to extend an invitation to you and your graphic design students to view the the Mohawk Show #10. It will be on display the month of October at Mac Papers Design Center. It will also be a wonderful opportunity for us to give a mini paper school, allow students to collect various mill paper samples and connect with the paper reps that call on the design industry. We especially believe it’s an excellent opportunity for the senior graphic design student.

The Mac Papers Design Center is a beautiful state of the art facility and is located only 20 minutes west of downtown Atlanta.

Mac Papers Design Center
460 Riverside Parkway
Lithia Springs, Georgia

Andrea Hill, Mac Paper specification representative is handling all scheduling. You may contact her at Andrea.hill@macpapers.com or 770-948-9959.

The Mohawk Show is an annual event and this year’s chair was Ellen Lupton. She writes:

A blank sheet of paper is an invitation to create. It asks us to sketch, compose, write, draw, and think. For the artist or writer, plunging into the snowy void of an empty page is a leap of faith mixed with terror and anticipation. Endless possibilities are buried in the pale depths and the creamy shallows of a flat, unprinted sheet. What will be found there? What stories will unfurl as paper is inked, cut, folded, and stitched? The work shown in this exhibition resulted from the hard work of hundreds of designers, art directors, photographers, illustrators, copy writers, production managers, clients, and printers who thought hard about how to fill blank sheets of paper with rich, purposeful content.

For ten years, The Mohawk Show has honored work produced on Mohawk paper that is outstanding in design and production. The entries represent a genuine cross-section of today’s design and printing industry. Owing to the quality of the paper and Mohawk’s role as a design leader, the competition draws outstanding entries from across the United States and the world. Judges Alice Chung, William Drenttel, and Jessica Helfand and competition chair Ellen Lupton studied hundreds of pieces, from posters and annual reports to museum catalogs and real estate prospectuses, to choose 5 winners and 20 finalists. The work selected represents the design industry’s highest level of creative thinking and physical production.

Congratulations Michelle!

Michelle Congratulations on this wonderful design and international recognition!

1800 Tequila Essential Artists Limited Edition:

1800 Essential Artists has commissioned the fine works of 8 hot urban artists throughout the country to design keepsake bottles. The renderings are magnificent that are colorful and really standout. Only 1800 of each bottle has been made in the collection, so they truly are "limited edition." While many tequila shots might make you want to cry, this one goes down smooth and is loved by many. Have a shot with salt and lime, or mix it up for your favorite margarita.

The London Poster Project

As part of this year’s London Design Festival, Domenic Lippa worked with the Festival’s Chairman, Sir John Sorrell, in curating the London Poster Project, a poster exhibition by 20 of the leading UK graphic designers and typographers including Tom Hingston, Frith Kerr, Alan Kitching, Fuel, Jonathan Ellery and Pentagram’s own Angus Hyland. Lippa commissioned the designers to produce a poster in red and black only that celebrates London as the creative capital of the world. Each silkscreened A1 poster was produced in limited edition of 100, 50 of which are available through the website Blanka. All 20 posters can be seen in the exhibition, which opened Saturday, 19 September and remains on view through 27th September at the Sackler Centre at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Irony from Pentagram

This design seems to marry what many of you have been doing in class recently...drawing detailed images of the brain and other drawing hearts.
Who would have thought to put overlay them on one another? Pentagram did.
(courtesy Pentagram.com)

The report's theme is 'Head and Heart' and the cover illustration joins a brain and a heart.

Justus Oehler and his team at Pentagram Berlin have designed the Triennial Report for the DRK Kliniken (Hospital Group of the German Red Cross) in Berlin. This is the second time Pentagram has designed the report for the group, which is a non-profit network of five hospitals in the city that provide specialized, high-quality care.

While reports of this kind for organizations in the health market are usually “dry” and factual, the DRK report offers something new with the unusual theme of “Kopf und Herz,” or “Head and Heart.” This juxtaposition of Facts and Figures vs. Feelings and Emotions has been used to enliven the report with sections titled “Innovation & Tradition,” “Old & Young,” “Giving & Taking,” “Man & Machine,” etc.

The designers decided on a visual system that would echo this dichotomy. The cover illustration is a human brain superimposed with a spot-varnished and embossed red heart. Each of the 15 chapters that make up the core of the 50-page report have been arranged as single spreads, with text on the left, and illustrations, created by Pentagram, on the right, all printed in red, grey and black.

The Geography of Design: Paula Scheer

New York, New York.
This should inspire those of you going to NYC in October and make those of you who can't go to NYC want to go even more. Wish everyone was going to celebrate yourselves as designers and artists.

(BTW: Paula Scheer was a visiting artist at GSU years ago.

Hey, this show does open Valentines Week, so why not use the familiar iconic candy hearts with all the names of the photographers on each heart?

MODA "Love Nest" is...

It's a show about photography and personal collections.
Photography incorporates cameras which in turn might be the person's prized possession.

Courtesy of:
www.ndroo.com/blog/?p=98

What if?

This comes from Junior Designer Melanie Bostwick's blog. It's from another resource which goes unidentified but it makes a visual impact which could lend itself, it's concept, to the MODA project "Love Nest" if you are thinking about using a heart image in your design. What about your type and image carved into a tree and then photographed? Or perhaps spray painted onto a surface and photographed? What if you took a group of cameras that range from old to new and photograph them for the design since the is how is about photography. Seems like an obvious direction to me.
An Exhibition of photography and personal momentos.

Below are photographs from Jack Pierson, Robert Mapplethorpe,Starn Twins, and John Dugdale that evoke a certain romance or love without showing a Heart. Think about photography.
Think about process. Think about doing something out of the ordinary.
Think about this exhibition as ART and then design around that.

Below: Look at what the Gap did with the color RED and the image of some celebrity wearing a Gap Tshirt. It's sexy, smart and designed beautifully.

Below: Jack Pierson did an incredible collage or images that related to his subject matter for his exhibition. Color/Texture and thought evoking.

Below: Mapplethorpe creates beauty from male sculpture photographed in profile. The photography is the momento of possession.

Below: John Dugdale imagery which evokes beauty, caring, love and symbol.

Two Weeks to Deadline for MODA: Love Nest

Everyone should be working diligently and creatively on design ideas for both poster concepts (Type only and Type and Image) for MODA. Also don't forget you are committed to designing images for a set of 4 cards as well. You can always do more than what is expected.

The month of September is already half over and you should be prepared to show everything you have regarding "Love Nest" on Monday, September 13th in class. These can be shown in class in digital version according to scale.

These are due at this month to present to MODA.
Some of you have yet to begin any work for this class on your blogs.
I'm seeing a lot of work for Drive-Invasion only.

MODA show and tell on monday at 11am.

Internship Info on MODA: Follow up

Not exactly a Graphic Design Internship, but you could always make it into a position where you use your design skills along with marketing. It sounds like they want someone who is willing to take charge on many levels. Even the Executive Director, Brenda Galina thought someone from your class would be terrific. As you already know
Graphic Design and Marketing are related on so many levels that this position could be very interesting. A good mix of design, marketing and advertising it sounds like.

MODA Internship
MARKETING:
The intern in Marketing will work closely with the Museum's Executive Director, Director of Operations, and Public Relations Consultant in the coordination and execution of various marketing efforts and events to increase awareness of the Museum to the public and specific design communities. The efforts include but are not limited to maintaining MODA's social networks outlets, designing and distributing e- blasts to our mailing lists, and keeping all Museum information and exhibitions listings up- to- date.

For information on these internships, please send a resume and cover letter
stating your interest and relevant experience to Raja Schaar, Director of
Operations at rschaar@museumofdesign.org. Also, Please let her know you are one of the graphic designers who is currently working with MODA on their project and a student of mine.

Past MODA poster designs: Thanks Chia

Here are some of the previous designs from MODA for their exhibitions courtesy of
Chia. Our always "photo-reliable" designer. Try to re-invent what has already been done and up the design concepts more. Again, One Poster design that is total type driven and another that is both image and type. Not to forget the set of cards which will also follow the exhibitions for "Love Nest."
